What Is Count Me In?

2015 will be the 7th year that the Count Me In! car giveaway will take place.  It was during the 2008-09 school year when the Las Cruces Board of Education created a policy to address an attendance problem within the district. The policy states that every high school student must be in each class at least 90% of the time to receive class credit. To create awareness about the new policy the Superintendent along with several business partners, including Las Cruces area Farmers’ Insurance agents, Vescovo Toyota of Las Cruces, First Light Federal Credit Union, NM National Guard, Pioneer Bank and Caliche’s stepped forward to create the Count Me In! Car Giveaway event. The partners cover the cost of the car, a $1,000 CD that is given away and the district organizes the event held each spring.

All high school students that meet the 90% attendance requirement are entered into the drawing. If the student has 100% attendance, their name is entered twice. High school principals use this as an incentive to encourage kids to come to class every day and on time.

Some students will get multiple entries in the drawing because they had 90 percent or better attendance in all their classes during both semesters of the school year. And, if a student has perfect attendance, he or she will get an additional entry for one or both semesters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do school absences for school sanctioned activities count against my 90% attendance?
Absences due to school-sanctioned trips (athletics, fine arts, JROTC, FFA, etc.) are considered excused absences and do NOT count against students’ attendance record.

Do I have to be present at the event to win the car?
Students do not have to be present to win the car. Names are automatically entered into the drawing each semester for those students who attending classes 90% of the time. However, students must be present to win other great door prizes that will be given at the event!

Transfer of ownership of the vehicle will be done the next business day, or at a mutually convenient time agreed upon between the winner and Vescovo Toyota. Parents/guardians of the student must be present at time of transfer.

The $1,000 giveaway from Firstlight Federal Credit Union will be placed in a 1 year share deposit at one of the bank locations. A credit union representative will be on hand to discuss the formalities with the winner.
