Mesilla Valley Transportation on Friday held its 4th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Red Hawk Golf Club, which raised $50,000 for the Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation. The funds will go directly toward mini-grants to help cover the cost of classroom supplies for teachers throughout the district.
Each year, the average teacher spends $500 for school supplies, which translates to $2 billion dollars in out-of-pocket expenses for teachers across the country. The $50,000 raised on Friday will go into an endowment created to fund $100 mini-grants that Las Cruces teachers can use for classroom supplies. The endowment ensures that the program will be able to continue into the future. So far this school year, the LCPS Foundation has awarded 60 mini-grants to teachers.
“Las Cruces Public Schools touches everyone in the community and helping teachers who help our kids is important,” said Cassidy Edmonds, Marketing Coordinator for MVT. “We are excited that we are working with the LCPS Foundation, and happy to know that an endowment for teachers will be created, which will continue to support teachers in the community.”
Mesilla Valley Transportation selects a different charity each year to help accomplish its goals that would have otherwise lacked the financial support needed. In the tournament’s second year, Royal Jones, CEO and President of Mesilla Valley Transportation, decided the tournament would select a different local charity each year as a way to make a difference in the Las Cruces community. This year, more than 60 teams participated in the MVT tournament. A silent auction also helped generate funding for the LCPS Foundation.
“Each day, teachers work tirelessly to educate their students, selflessly paying out of pocket to cover the cost of basic school supplies to ensure the success of every student,” said Brigitte Zigelhofer, LCPS Community Outreach Liaison and LCPSF board member. “The Mesilla Valley Transportation Charity Golf Tournament exceeded our expectations in raising $50,000 to support teachers across the district. We extend our gratitude to Mesilla Valley Transportation and everyone who helped make this tournament a success.”
