Las Cruces Public Schools will hold two events in September, in observance of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
A two-mile suicide prevention awareness walk will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, at Young Park. Registration for the “Out of the Darkness” walk begins at 8 a.m. A number of speakers will address the crowd at 9:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m.
This event is being organized in conjunction with ENLACE Southern at Doña Ana Community College. While the event is free to participate, ENLACE is encouraging that donations be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which funds research, education, advocacy and support for those affected by suicide. A second walk and candlelight vigil is planned for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Horseshoe on the campus of New Mexico State University. “A Walk for Compassion and Hope” is a collaborative effort between Las Cruces Public Schools, the NMSU Department of Public Health Sciences and community partners.
