Based on their ability to maintain the top-performing, hypothetical stock portfolios during the spring semester of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation Stock Market Game, one team from Centennial High School earned first place in the high school category and another team from Zia Middle School earned second place in the middle school category.

The Stock Market Game is a live trading simulation where students build and manage hypothetical stock portfolios which are based on the actual marketplace. According to a SIFMA Foundation news release, the competition is designed to boost students’ math, economics and personal finance knowledge, while also improving their test scores.

The program offers students in grades four through 12 the opportunity to manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio by “investing” in stocks chosen from the American, New York and NASDAQ markets over the course of a 10-week semester. In order to simulate the experience of managing a real stock portfolio, students keep track of their portfolio and cash and pay broker’s fees on each transaction.

The program also includes curriculum and classroom lessons that reinforce New Mexico teaching standards, STEM requirements, and 21 Century Skills, according to a SIFMA Foundation news release.

At the end of each year, the SIFMA Foundation recognizes the winners of the fall, spring, and year-long 2017-18 Stock Market Game competitions in New Mexico. The two top-performing teams in each of the three competition categories — elementary, middle and high school — with the highest portfolio value win awards in elementary, middle and high school categories.

According to a SIFMA Foundation news release, the Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of the financial markets for individuals of all backgrounds, with a focus on youth. As one of the SIFMA Foundation’s most prominent programs, the Stock Market Game has served an estimated 17 million students since it was founded in 1977.
