Las Cruces High School junior Mustafa Muhyi recently earned at total of two awards at the 2018 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) May 13-18 in Pittsburgh, PA. Muhyi was selected for the awards based on an abstract of his independent research that studied the effectiveness of interactive rehabilitation methods for people affected by neurological injuries.

Las Cruces High School junior Mustafa Muhyi shows off his research abstract that earned him two awards at the 2018 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 13-18 in Pittsburgh, PA.

“The time, talent and thought that went into this research is remarkable,” said LCPS Superintendent Dr. Greg Ewing. “It’s wonderful to see our students earning accolades for their work at the highest level of competition, both nationally and internationally.”

Muhyi’s research abstract, “An Interactive Design of an Upper Limb Motor Relearning Method for Neurological Injuries with Tangible Robotic Companionship and Emotion Assessment,” was awarded the Air Force Research Laboratory First Award of $750 in the Behavioral and Social Sciences category, and the Fourth Award of $500 in the Grand Awards category.

To qualify for the international competition, Muhyi earned first place in his competition category at the 2018 Southwestern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair at New Mexico State University.

This is the second year in a row that Muhyi has qualified for the international competition. In 2017, Muhyi’s research abstract, “EZsleep: A Wearable Device to Help Diagnose Obstructive Sleep Apnea,” won first place in the Computer Science category of the regional competition.

According to the Intel ISEF website, the Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public, is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories compete in approximately 22 separate categories to showcase their independent research and compete for, on average, $4 million in prizes.
