Officials from Las Cruces Public Schools honored 77 graduating seniors, who demonstrated they are fluent in two or more languages, at a special recognition ceremony Thursday, April 26 at the Oñate High School Performing Arts Center. All of the students honored at the ceremony are set to receive the state seal of bilingualism-biliteracy on their New Mexico diploma of excellence when they graduate later this year.

Bilingual Seal Ceremony

Graduating seniors from throughout the district, set to earn the state seal of bilingualism-biliteracy on their New Mexico diploma of excellence, receive medals and certificates of recognition at a special ceremony Thursday, April 26 at the Oñate High School Performing Arts Center.

“What these students have accomplished is no small feat,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Ewing. “Becoming fluent in two or more languages demonstrates that these students possess the talent and dedication to be successful in whatever career they choose.”

To earn the seal, students must meet several requirements, including successful completion of state assessments in a language, written and oral presentations, and a minimum grade point average in a number of language courses. As part of the recognition ceremony, students were awarded school-specific medals, inscribed with the seal and certificates of recognition.

Former Las Cruces High School Principal Jed Hendee, LCPS officials and Board of Education President Ed Frank recognize a senior who will receive the state seal of bilingualism-biliteracy on his New Mexico diploma of excellence. The recognition is part of a districtwide ceremony to honor students who are set to earn the state seal when they graduate later this year.

“The seal sends a message about the value of language learning, giving a boost to students who excel in a foreign language, as well as those who are native speakers of languages other than English,” said Dr. Jennifer Haan, LCPS executive director of bilingual and migrant education.

According to the state seal guidance handbook, the state seal of bilingualism-biliteracy on a New Mexico diploma of excellence certifies that the recipient is proficient for meaningful use in college, a career or to meet a local community language need in a world language other than English. The handbook also states that each graduate’s high school transcript shall also indicate that the graduate received the state seal on their New Mexico diploma of excellence.

The seal was introduced by the New Mexico Public Education Department in fall 2015.
