On Friday, April 13, Las Cruces Public Schools held a job fair to recruit employees for the 2018-19 school year. The job fair focused on recruiting teachers, substitute teachers and substitute educational assistants for the upcoming school year, particularly in hard to fill areas, such as special education. The fair was held in early spring to allow the district to address the needs and proactively fill positions with the best candidates.

“There was a consistent number of potential candidates coming in throughout the day,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Miguel Serrano. “Since we conducted ongoing interviews during the fair, we have already identified quite a few candidates who we are hoping to hire for the upcoming school year.”

Over the last three years, Las Cruces Public Schools has added 87 new teaching positions, 48 new educational assistant positions, four new nursing positions, 18 new social workers and counselors, 21 new custodians and five new upper administrator positions. Data for the three year comparison was compiled by members of the budget planning committee as they studied district-wide staffing trends.

“As a longtime educator, I’m happy to see so many new teachers joining our district. It shows how dedicated we are to providing the best educational experience for each and every student,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Ewing. “It’s wonderful to see our committee members analyzing these figures so closely, in the hopes of bringing on even more teachers and support staff for the upcoming school year.”

The LCPS budget planning committee is composed of district officials, members of the National Education Association-Las Cruces and the Classified School Employees Council-Las Cruces and community members. The district is in the process of developing the 2018-19 district budget, in tandem with union bargaining discussions. As the 2018-19 planning process ensues, the district plans to continue to focus on classroom positions and addressing the district-wide substitute shortage.
