MVLA Moving to Lynn Middle Campus Next School Year
The Las Cruces Public Schools has announced that the Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy, a project-based middle school, will move to a wing on the campus of Lynn Community Middle School, 950 S. Walnut Street. Students, teachers, and staff will report to the new location at the start of the 2018-19 school year.
“We have always wanted to give our students more access to electives, resources, sports, and afterschool activities”, said Dr. Toni Hull, the principal of MVLA and recently named principal of Lynn Community School. “This move allows us to do more for our students and the community. We believe that we can be a model for other middle schools and give more students an opportunity to attend MVLA.”
Although housed on the Lynn Community School campus, Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy, currently located in Mesilla Park, will remain a separate school. Students will continue to receive transportation to the school from their zoned middle school. Hull said that the mission and vision of MVLA will remain the same and will continue to evolve to meet the needs of students.
“This is a great opportunity for MVLA and the community,” she said. MVLA and Lynn Middle School students and parents are invited to two meetings to discuss the vision for the school on Wednesday, March 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lynn Community Middle School and Wednesday, April 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Lynn Middle School.
“So many of our students are very active learners and learn more through hands-on learning with projects as opposed to traditional instruction. We want to offer such a specialized environment at Lynn,” Hull said. “The amazing part is that 80 to 100 kids that are not in magnet programs at Lynn will now have the opportunity to attend MVLA. In addition, all of our students at Lynn Community Middle School will be a part of a thriving campus culture that includes teams called Houses, more activity days and exciting leadership activities and events.”
