Children who will be five years old by September 1 need to preregister for kindergarten for the 2018/19 school year.  Preregistration will be 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 pm., Friday, April 6 at all elementary schools (except Sunrise Elementary which does not have kindergarten-aged students). Erlinda Martinez, Chief Academic Officer, said enrollment into school is based on a child’s age.

“A child must be five years old before 12:01 a.m. on September 1 in order to enter kindergarten,” Martinez said. “The law is very specific and although some families believe their four-year-olds may be academically prepared for kindergarten, we cannot accept them until they reach the legal age.”

Parents need to bring several items in order to complete the preregistration process, including proof of their child’s date of birth, such as a birth certificate, passport/visa or a state-certified document.  No photocopies will be accepted, officials said.  In addition, parents must bring current immunization records, the child’s social security card (which is optional) and proof of their home address and residence. This could be through a current property tax bill, utility bill, a renter’s lease agreement.

Students who are set to attend kindergarten at Mesilla, Mesilla Park, Sonoma and University Hills Elementary Schools can pre-register online as of March 1. At that time, parents may begin the online application process to expedite the registration process. You may complete the online registration at home but computers are available to use at schools if needed. All information submitted online must be verified using the documents listed above when parents attend the Kindergarten Pre-Registration day on April 6. To pre-register online visit:

“If a parent cannot attend the April  6 preregistration, they can register just before the new school year begins in early August,” Martinez said.

When registering, parents can also sign up for school bus transportation if the child’s home is one mile or more, one way only, from the assigned school. More information about bus ridership and rules can be found online at

Parents who need information about kindergarten can contact the principal at their assigned elementary school.
