A fundraiser organized by the student council at Doña Ana Elementary School recently collected $1,100 to support the recent victims of a home fire that occurred earlier this month. During the fundraiser, students got an opportunity to wear pajamas, wear a baseball cap and/or bring in a favorite stuffed animal. In return, participants were asked to make a voluntary donation, if possible.

“It was inspiring to see all the students who brought in donations. It speaks volumes about the character of our students here at Doña Ana,” said DAES Principal Cherie Love. “Kindness, empathy and character are the traits I saw demonstrated today as they rallied to help a fellow student and family in need!”

The single-day fundraiser brought in a total of $1,100 in cash donations which will be given to the family as a check. Although there was no minimum donation amount required for any of the participants, Love said some students made rather large contributions to support the family.

“We called to confirm the donation amounts for anything over five dollars. One of the students even donated the money he received for his birthday,” Love said. “You could tell these students knew that every little bit counts and they all wanted to do their part to help this family.”

In addition to the student fundraiser, Love mentioned that the staff will also hold a fundraiser which will award “jean day” coupons in return for voluntary donations. The money collected during the staff fundraiser will also be given to the family later this month.
