MHS Students Win State for Bilingual Children’s Book
Earlier this month, Amanda Valverde and Juliana Wisner, both students at Mayfield High School (MHS), earned first place in the K-3 Children’s Literature competition at the Third Annual Educators Rising New Mexico Conference in Albuquerque. The conference, hosted by New Mexico State University, is designed to support students interested in entering the education profession.
As part of the competition, Valverde and Wisner wrote, developed and illustrated an original, bilingual (English and Spanish) children’s book. They will now go on to compete in the 2018 Educators Rising National Competition in Orlando, FL.
“The time, effort and thought that went into these projects was astounding,” said MHS Assistant Principal Alfred Rue. “It’s inspiring to see such talented students already working towards establishing their careers in the education field.”
Last year, Valverde also advanced to the national competition for her success in the Children’s Literature Pre-K category. The NMSU College of Education established Educators Rising NM in 2015. Educators Rising NM is part of a national organization, formerly known as Future Teachers of America.
