Quick facts about MVLA

“We focus on having a student-centered, rigorous, project-based learning environment and a culture that fosters leadership skills and teamwork,” Hull said. “We are looking for students that want to learn in a nontraditional way and be leaders in their learning.”

Unlike traditional middle schools, the school has a unique project-based learning approach which allows students to produce real-world products and presentations that demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency in a given subject. Each project is based on a monthly theme, which is developed by the teachers and school administration.

“Whether it’s a short story, a community service project, a video, a play, or another type of presentation, students often have a wide range of options to showcase what they learned.” Hull said. “Each month features a different theme and there is often some kind of field trip that relates to the theme as well.”

The school also offers a unique approach to electives that allows students to work with a teacher-facilitator to set and achieve goals based on their interests.

“We have some students learning cooking, woodworking, musical instruments, recreational sports, languages, art, coding, etc.,” Hull said.  “Students choose their focus, the teacher facilitates the learning, and then we work hard to get the resources we need for the student to progress in their goals.”

There are approximately 100 students currently enrolled at the school, and Hull mentioned that parents are always welcome to drop by the school for a tour.

Earlier this year, the school was featured in a video blog post from nationally known education speaker Hal Bowman. Throughout the video, Bowman commended the school for creating memorable moments for the students. Click Here to view the video.
