The Children’s Reading Alliance (CRA) is now registering parents with children ages 3 to 5 for the First Teacher/Primer Maestro program. The six-week program is designed to provide bilingual/monolingual families with free learning resources. The program is free and open to all Doña Ana County residents with a three- to five-year-old child.
The program provides free bilingual classes, free learning toys and bilingual books and materials, free child vision checks, free childcare for children between the ages of two and eight, and free snacks and drinks.
The program will be offered at:
- Doña Ana Elementary, 5551 Camino De Flores, Feb. 6 – March 13, Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. | To register for the program at Doña Ana Elementary School, contact: Olga Ramirez (831) 756-3461
- Lynn Middle School, Feb. 8 – March 15, Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. | To register for the program at Lynn Middle School, contact: Gracie Moreno (575) 640-4322
Families are not required to live within the school boundaries to attend at either location.
According to the CRA website, the decided focus of the six-week First Teacher/Primer Maestro program is engaging parents in the education of their children. For parents to succeed in the role as ones who help prepare their children to enter kindergarten –as their children’s teachers — it is important for them to know how children learn and develop, to learn how talking, playing and reading with children develops skills and, finally, to understand the skill requirements for beginning kindergarten. Since the program began in 2012, more than 600 families have earned certificates from the First Teacher/Primer Maestro program.
The Children’s Reading Alliance (formerly under the name The Children’s Reading Foundation of Doña Ana County) focuses on advancing children’s literacy in Doña Ana County.
