Hillrise Elementary Hosts Donation Drive for Hurricane Harvey Victims
To help support people impacted by Hurricane Harvey, staff members at Hillrise Elementary School will be collecting towels, blankets, toiletries, and other items at the school’s front office from Wednesday, Aug. 30 to Friday, Sept. 1. All of the collected items will then be delivered over the Labor Day weekend to the Salvation Army in El Paso, TX. The Salvation Army will then deliver the donations to the affected areas in Texas.
The items being collected are: new socks, underwear and towels, blankets, baby diapers (all sizes), baby wipes, baby food, shampoo and conditioner, body and hand soap, deodorant, toothpaste, shaving cream and razors. The drive will not be collecting financial donations and the drive organizers ask that any financial contributions be sent to the donor’s charity of choice.
“We wanted to do something to help those affected by the hurricane, so we contacted the Salvation Army at got a list of the items they needed,” said Hillrise Elementary School Counselor Rebekah Martinez. “The donation drive is a great way to support those in need and it’s also a good philanthropic lesson for the students.”
The LCPS Finance Department is also hosting a similar collection drive from Wednesday, Aug. 30 to Friday, Sept. 1 in the LCPS Finance department office, located in the LCPS Administration Building, 505. S. Main Street, Suite 249. The drive will be collecting similar donations that will be delivered to the Spot Nutrition, a local business, which will subsequently deliver the items directly to the Red Cross in Houston, TX. This drive will also not be collecting financial donations.
