RodRunners Car Club Makes Back to School Donation
As a way to help support economically disadvantaged high school students throughout LCPS, the Las Cruces RodRunners Car Club donated 135 backpacks filled with school supplies to the LCPS Project Link Homeless Education Program, Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the LCPS Administration Building, 505 S. Main Street, Suite 249.
“The high school students don’t always get the same level of support as the elementary kids, so we started the donation to make sure they start the school year with everything they need to be successful,” said RodRunners Past President Ralph Gonzales. “Our club also offers a number of college scholarships for high school students.”
The club, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, partnered with the Breakfast Optimists Club and the Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary to provide school supplies for high school students. The club also typically makes a monetary donation to Project Link, “to assist high school students with back-to-school necessities such as: scientific calculators, haircuts, shoes and much more,” said LCPS Lead Social Worker Yoli Silva.
The car club was founded more than 26 years ago as a way for classic and custom car enthusiasts to gather, however, the club quickly grew into a philanthropic organization which offers support to a variety of charitable causes throughout New Mexico, according to club officials.
“Donations like this are so uplifting for students who don’t have the financial means to buy new school supplies,” said Brigitte Zigelhofer, LCPS community outreach liaison. “The RodRunners have consistently gone above and beyond for our students and we’re grateful for their continued support.”
This is the sixth consecutive year the organization has donated backpacks for LCPS high school students. To date, they have donated more than 375 backpacks.
The car club’s annual fundraiser, the annual “Wheels of Dreams” car show, raises thousands of dollars to provide and promote opportunities for underprivileged youth in the greater Las Cruces community, according to the club’s website. The next “Wheels of Dreams” car show will take place in March 2018.
