Former Oñate Student Commissioned as Naval Officer

Kelley Krause, a graduate of Oñate High School and the University of New Mexico, was commissioned as a Naval Officer on May 13, 2017.  Krause was a 2013 Oñate graduate and was a 4-year member of the NJROTC.  She is the daughter of Elisa Krause-Campangna of Las Cruces.

The commissioning ceremony took place at the University of New Mexico. She was sworn in as a Navy Ensign by her former Senior Naval Science Instructor, Michael S. Dixon, Commander USN ret.  Her ceremonial first salute was received from her former Naval Science Instructor, and by Senior Chief Boatswains Mate Robert Rodriguez USN ret.

Ens. Kelly Krause will report to her first duty station USS Somerset, LPD-25 in June. The USS Somerset is homeported in San Diego, California. Ens. Krause will begin the qualification process of becoming a Naval Surface Warfare Officer.

During her time as a member of the Oñate NJROTC, Kelley commanded the unarmed drill team. She was also a member of the marksmanship, physical fitness, and color guard teams. During her senior year, she was appointed the unit Commanding Officer and was awarded a NROTC Scholarship to the University of New Mexico where she majored in English and minored in military studies.
