Marco Garcia, a former junior at Arrowhead Park Early College High School, celebrates winning a Toyota Yaris at the 2016 Count Me In! Car Giveaway Event, May 5, 2016, at the Field of Dreams Soccer Complex.

Thousands of high school students throughout LCPS will once again get the chance to enjoy an afternoon of free food, entertainment, and prize giveaways at the 9th Annual Count Me In! Car giveaway, Thursday, May 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Field of Dreams Soccer Complex on Tashiro Road. The annual event represents the culmination of a year-long attendance initiative that will award one high school student a 2011 Toyota Camry.

In order to qualify for the car giveaway, students must have maintained a 90 percent attendance rate in either the fall or spring semesters. Each semester, students can earn one raffle entry if they maintain a 90 percent attendance rate and two entries if they have perfect attendance.

Since a student can earn up to two raffle entries each semester—and they can earn an additional entry by bringing their qualification ticket to the giveaway event— individual students can earn a total of five car raffle entries during a given school year.

“I’d like to thank the event sponsors for helping to ensure our students show up to class,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Ewing. “The community is always so supportive when it comes to education and it shows just how committed they are to ensuring our students’ long-term success.”

The free, high-school-student-only event is open to all LCPS high school students, regardless of whether they qualified for the car giveaway. Although students do not have to be present to win the car, they do have to be present to win the variety of prizes which will also be raffled off throughout the event.

“The event is a fun, stress-free way for the students to celebrate the end of the school year,” said LCPS Community Outreach Liaison Brigitte Zigelhofer. “The sponsors do a wonderful job of making the event fun for the students, and the students get the chance to enjoy some free food, entertainment and possibly win some great prizes.”

The two-hour event will feature: free hotdogs and frozen custard, an inflatable obstacle course, a photo booth, a DJ and a wide variety of games. The prizes which will be given away at the event include: a $1,000 savings deposit, $200 gasoline gift certificate prize packs, a flat screen television, a laptop computer, movie passes, gasoline gift certificates, Beats headphones and LCPS Athletics passes.

All of the prizes were donated by the event sponsors, some of which also made financial contributions to help with the purchase of the car. The event is sponsored by: Vescovo Toyota, Caliche’s Frozen Custard, Pioneer Bank, Organ Mountain Outfitters, FirstLight Federal Credit Union, Pic Quik, Campos Creative School Portraits and the Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation. Support for the event is also provided by: Hubbard’s Music–N-More, the New Mexico National Guard, Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico and Riverside Technologies Inc. (RTI).

The Count Me In! attendance initiative was created in 2009 to coincide with the school board policy and regulation that deals with compulsory student attendance and graduation requirements, Zigelhofer said.
