A capella choir ensembles from the Oñate High School (OHS) choir and Sierra Middle School (SMS) choir took home top honors for their vocal performances at the Best of New Mexico A capella Competition, Saturday Feb. 25 at V. Sue Cleveland High School in Albuquerque, NM.
“We are extremely proud of the musicianship displayed by our singers. They were extremely professional and performed with such head and heart. We are looking forward to competing again next year,” said OHS Choir Director Ryan Fellman.
Two ensembles from OHS, A Capella and Silverettes, won the High School Mixed Division Championship, Unisex Division Championship and Best Stage Presence, while one ensemble from SMS, Soundsations, won the Middle School Division Championship. The ensembles were selected for the awards based on their sound quality, technical accuracy, musicality and stage deportment.
As part of the competition, all of the performers got to participate in a workshop with Voces8, a professional a capella octet from the United Kingdom. Both Fellman and SMS Director Pamela Quinones decided to prepare ensembles for the competition so that their students would be able to experience singing with the professional ensemble, according to Fellman.
“This was an incredible weekend and I couldn’t be any happier with our group and the way everything turned out,” said OHS Senior Johnny Rey Montenegro. “It’s nice to know that our hard work did not go unnoticed.”
The competition was open to sixth-through 12th-grade students who advanced from the preliminary competition held on Friday, Feb. 24.
