Walk to School DayFor the second consecutive year, all 25 LCPS elementary schools will be hosting walking events as part of International Walk or Bike to School Day, starting Friday, Sept. 30 through Thursday, Oct. 6. Click Here to download a schedule of all the 2016 Walk to School day events.

“These events are a great way to stay active, reduce traffic and develop a real sense of camaraderie with everyone who is waking,” said Ashleigh Curry, coordinator for the LCPS Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. “I love the sense of community that International Walk to School Day brings. It’s so great to see people talking, meeting new friends and interacting with the community.”

All of the guided walking events are open to students, parents, staff and community members and will follow the established “walking school bus” routes that start at various locations and end at individual elementary schools.

Each year local elected officials, board members and other dignitaries are invited to participate in the event at the “highlighted” school for that year. This year’s “highlighted” school is Sonoma Elementary School.

This is the tenth year LCPS has participated in the international event, which is celebrated in communities across the globe. Last year’s events had a record number of more than 3,000 participants.

Last year the Las Cruces Safe Routes to School program had approximately 22,734 student walkers, 1,288 student bicyclists and 5,098 adult volunteers from all 25 elementary schools.
