LAS CRUCES – Go Rattlers! The Mesa Middle School boys team won the LCPS middle school basketball championship March 8, 2014 at Mesa, said Mesa Assistant Principal Steve Rodriguez. The Rattlers avenged their only loss of the season by defeating the Zia Middle School Thunderbirds 31-28 in the championship game. Mesa wound up the season 12-1.

“The heart and soul of the Mesa team is player Keith Covarrubia,” said Coach Mike Dominguez. “He was also the heart and soul of Mesa’s second-place football team in district this year. He has this personality and work ethic that is contagious and everyone wants to work as hard as he does. All of the players came together to work hard for our goal we set at the beginning of the year, to win the first ever championship at Mesa. Keith has been an example of our ‘Spread the Word to End the Word against using the R-word’ campaign here at Mesa, in that no matter our differences we should all be treated as equals,” said Dominguez.

Keith is an active leader and athlete at Mesa. He is also a member of Project UNIFY (funded by Special Olympics) and will represent those with disabilities at the second annual Project UNIFY track meet May 1 at Mayfield High School.

Mesa is LCPS’ newest middle school. It opened in late 2010.
