LAS CRUCES – Five LCPS elementary schools collected 3,008 cans of food for the recent One Can Per Student food drive conducted by the Salvation Army of Las Cruces, said DeeDee Varner of the Salvation Army.

Schools participating in the food drive were César E. Chávez, Columbia, Hermosa Heights, Mesilla and Valley View.

Hermosa Heights Elementary led the way with 1,012 cans of food collected, said Varner. Hermosa Heights Elementary conducted a school-wide competition to see which grade level could collect the most canned goods, said Principal Terry Stuart. The third grade won.
